Removal Orders and FBA Reimbursements

Sellers on Amazon always want to be able to have the possibility to return their products - present in Amazon Logistics - to their warehouse.
To have your inventory returned from Amazon Logistics, you must send a so-called FBA Removal order, and pay a Removal fee (tariff).
In this guide, we'll explore:
- three different methods to send a removal order
- what problems can arise in a removal order
- how to obtain any FBA Reimbursements for your removal order
Why "Remove" Your Items from FBA Logistics
There are several reasons why you might want to send a removal order for your inventory located in FBA warehouses. The most common reasons are:
- Avoid long-term storage fees for items that have been in the warehouse for more than 12 months
- Remove "stuck" inventory that can't be restored or is no longer active
- Eliminate items with negative reviews or a high return rate, which could indicate a problem with your product
How to Create an FBA Removal Order
There are 3 main methods to create a removal order:
- Method 1: Quick order (for 10 items or less): This is the ideal method if you have few items to remove (about 10 or less). Each item is removed individually.
- Method 2: Medium removal order (up to 250 items): This method is similar to the first, but allows you to remove a larger number of items (up to 250) more efficiently.
- Method 3: Bulk removal order (for 250+ items): This option is best if you need to remove 250 or more items, especially if you have a list of items to remove via spreadsheet file.
1. Create a Quick Removal Order (for 10 items or less)
- Go to Seller Central and select "Inventory" then "Manage Inventory".
- Search for the item to remove (you can search by UPC, SKU or title).
- Select "Edit" next to the item then "Create removal order".
- Enter the correct quantities (sellable and unsellable) and click "Continue".
- Check the removal method and make sure it's "Ship-to address" (and not "Dispose"), then click "Order".
2. Create a Medium Removal Order (up to 250 items)
- Go to Seller Central and select "Inventory" then "Manage Inventory".
- Search for items to remove and select the boxes next to those you want to remove.
- Click "Action on X selected" (where X is the number of items you chose).
- Select "Create removal order" and confirm the order.
- Make sure the quantities are correct and click "Order".
3. Create a Bulk Removal Order (for 250+ items)
- Select an item and click "Edit", then choose "Create removal order".
- Instead of manually entering quantities, click "Upload file".
- Download the template, fill in the file with the correct information and save it as a .txt file.
- Upload the file to Seller Central and verify that the process was completed without errors.
What Can Go Wrong During an FBA Removal Process?
During the Removal process several problems and damages to your products can occur: in all these cases, Amazon provides by its Policy to reimburse you with an FBA Reimbursement. In particular:
-
Reimbursement for Items lost or damaged during the removal process: If an item you requested to return doesn't arrive or gets damaged, Amazon will return the total removal cost for that product. This applies whether the item doesn't arrive at all or suffers irreparable damage during transport.
-
Reimbursement for Items not received: If you created a removal order but the items are never returned to your shipping address, Amazon will reimburse you the removal fee for those items. This happens if, for example, Amazon fails to properly ship the requested items or if something goes wrong during the disposal process.
-
Reimbursement for Items not properly disposed of: If you chose to dispose of items (rather than have them returned) and Amazon doesn't dispose of them, you might be able to request a reimbursement for the disposal fee.
How to Request an FBA Reimbursement for Removal Orders
- Access Seller Central and Go to the Help section
- Open a reimbursement request: Select as subject FBA reimbursement management or Returns and refunds, depending on available options, and open a reimbursement request for missing or damaged items.
- Include and provide precise details about the removal order (order number, items involved, removal date, etc.). If necessary, attach any evidence or photographs (if items are damaged).
- Wait for request processing: Amazon will review your request and return the amount if approved. Usually, the verification process takes a few business days, but depends on the situation.
Terms for FBA Reimbursement Request
- Timelines: You can request reimbursement within 90 days from the removal order date, if items weren't returned or properly disposed of.
- Request outcome: If the reimbursement request is approved, Amazon will issue the reimbursement directly to your seller central account and balance.
